We are traveling to Italy in June. We have heard that the train station is about a mile from the airport. What is the best way to get to the train station? Are there cabs readily available? There are 6 of us and 2 are elderly and cannot walk great distances. Thanks.

Hi Nancy,
... This is a link that could be helpful...
... ciao! P
The train station is a part of the airport. It is a long walk and it could be a mile depending on the gate your plane uses. I don't think you can reach Lucca without going through the Rome train terminal -- someone will correct me if wrong -- so you will need to get into Rome. The Leonard Express would be about $17 a person so getting a private van under 75 Euro or even two taxis at 80 Euro ( 40 each) would be worth it. I am sure you could request a wheel chair to the front door.
The train station is connected to the airport. It's an easy walk from baggage claim and there's an escalator up to the tracks. Take the Leonardo Express to Roma Termini station where you will change to the train to Lucca, likely with another change of train in Florence. There's a ticket counter and also a travel agency on the departure platform for the Leonardo Express. I would recommend buying all of your train tickets to Lucca there. Another idea (although I've not done this) is to take a shuttle van to Termini station. With 6 people, it might only cost EUR 54 compared to EUR 66 for Leonardo Express (EUR 11 each). Rick recommends Rome Airport Shuttle (www.airportshuttle.it). In that case, you would need to buy your Lucca tickets at Termini station.
On the www.trenitalia.com site, all runs go to Rome for a train change. The entire trip will take about 5.0hrs.
