Transportation from Prague to Salzburg on July 5

We have made our hotel arrangements and planned to take the train from Prague to Salzburg on July 5. When I went online today to purchase tickets or rail pass and make reservations, I see that the only reasonably priced train leaves prague @ 5 p.m. (and arrives at 3 a.m.). Yet the tickets for July 6 are not available yet ( and there seems to be other times available) is this just a really busy travel time? Does anyone have other ideas for getting from Prague to Salzburg at a reasonable cost. We could change hotel reservations and plans, but really don't want to.

I had no problem finding connections for 5.7.08 on the German Rail schedule site, including a 7hr 34min connection through Landshut that you can buy online direct from German Rail for €58,60 (about $93).

Alternatively, you can buy a Bayern-Ticket for the 5th online for €27. In Prague you buy a Czech Rail ticket to Furth im Wald on the German Border, a little more than 220 Czech Koruna (€8,60), then use the Bayern-Ticket from the Czech border via Landshut to Salzburg.

"when I put in the saturday date, it only pulled up trains for Sunday".

Did you change the time from the default? If you let it select the time, and you make the query close to midnight German time, there might not be any connections left for Saturday. Then you would get only Sunday trains.

thanks to all for your helpful hints and web sites. I was just able to book seats and reservations on the DB web site at an exceptable time. i see that if you go on the particular country's web site, you often have more choices and the prices are better.

I am hoping this is the first of many train trips in Europe, so I am grateful for all the help and hints.

Debbie, I see six trains on the Austrian train website (www.obb.com) for July 5 leaving before 5pm. I see them on the German website (www.bahn.de) as well. One leaves at 9:11, 9:16, 11:11, 11:16. Journey times are a bit over 7hrs. Fare looks to be about 59Euro. Where are you looking?

I was looking on the raileurope site (raileurope.com) and also on the German website. On the German web site, when I put in the saturday date, it only pulled up trains for Sunday. Rail europe did show reservations on an 8:00 a.m. ish train, but only the most expensive seats were available. I didn't know about the Austrian one. I will check there. This is the first time I have booked rail travel in europe, so I appreciate the help. I was originally thinking on getting an Austria/Czech saver pass, but am now rethinking this, maybe point to point would be cheaper. We are going from Prague to Salzburg on July 5, and then from Salzburg to Vienna on July 7.
