our ship lands in the port of rome at 5 am, our flight leaves at 10 am... is that doable or should i change my flight?
Even though your ship "docks" at Civitavecchia at 05:00, odds are you will not be cleared to disembark until 06:30 - 07:00 at the earliest. I'd certainly talk with your cruise line about exactly "when" you can get off the boat. If you cannot get off until after 07:00, then odds are you will have a tough time making a 10:00 flight. You would have to be among the first off, and you'd have to have a private shuttle pre-booked and waiting for you. The ride is only about 60 km and most of it is on A12 so figure a 40-45 minute ride. One you clear the Civitavecchia "traffic" it's fairly quick by car. If you are flying a USA-flagged airline from FCO directly back to the States you would have to depart from Terminal 5 at FCO. Most US-flagged airlines recommend being at FCO three hours in advance for your flight. So it all depends on when you can get off the ship. Again, contact your cruise line and be prepared to look at other flight options as this is a very narrow window.
Thank you all for the information...wish I had checked into this BEFORE I purchased my tickets...Thank you all again...
That is too tight. We been on two cruises out of Rome and it is wild when the ships docks. It could be much closer to 7 or even 8 am before you are off the ship. The only way possible MIGHT BE to book the ship's transportation because that will get off in the first wave but I still would not do it. With 10 AM flight it is mostly likely a connecting to somewhere else in Europe for your flight home but you would still need to be at the airport no later than 8:30. We always spend an extra day or two in Rome after the cruise just so that we can have a leisurely departure from the ship and an easy time at the airport. What is the rush to get home, anyway?
Christine, Is your 10:00 flight directly back to the U.S., or does it stop at another European airport first? I've found that on flights within the E.U., I can often use a two-hour check-in. Another option would be to contact the airline to determine whether you could change to a slightly later flight. There would of course be a "fee" for the change. As Frank mentioned, spending at least one extra night in Rome would be a big help in solving the problem of a tight connection. Good luck and happy travels!
Why did you ask on the 7th if you should change your flight when you had already purchased the tickets? You have a serious problem. Most European airlines have a strict 45 min cut off for check for you really to be at the airport by 9 pm or a little earlier. The airport can be very busy with long lines at that time. I am sure that in your pre cruise info you were advised not to book a departure till the PM so the cruise may not be very sympathetic you need for a earlier departure. I am still assuming you have a connecting flight. I see two option 1. Contact Romecab.com or someone similar and arrange a pick up at the port entrance at 7 - 7:30. That should get you to the airport by 8:30. Adequate time for a domestic flight. 2. Contact the airline and arrange for a later flight, preferably a day later. The cost to change will probably be about the same as the cab to the airport. 3. Get on CruiseCritic, com and sign up for your specific cruise - date and time - and try to make contact with other passengers who might want to share a cab to the airport. Again, assuming that you each have one small bag so that four people with luggage can fit in the taxi. 4. We have been on 12 European cruises and dock times are an approximation at best. Lots of things can impact the actually docking time and time that passengers can go ashore. While most docking times are within 30 minutes or less, we once were six hour late.
And one finally complication you might have. They ask to put your luggage out the night before so it can moved to a staging area. When you depart you have to pick up your luggage dock side. The availability of luggage is timed to your departure. If you depart at 7 your luggage is available at 7 and if you are scheduled to depart at 8, your luggage will not be available till 8. Your departure is timed so that it is fairly orderly departure and not everyone is rushing the door at the same time. Priority is given to those who need it so you should be able to get off in the first or second wave. A lot of the times the first wave is people taking the cruise ship's transportation to the airport or to Rome. For us, we only travel with only carryon so if we need a early departure and cannot get it, we just walk off with our carryon luggage because we did not put any luggage out the night before. So we don't have to pick up luggage. Travel light even on a cruise ship has many advantages.
