Transportation from my hotel in Rome to Leonardo Da Vinci Airport

I will be in Rome with my wife in mid October and will be staying at the Marriott. Our flight out of Rome is around 6PM. Are the taxi fares "fair" at 40 Euros now, or is the best method of transfer a cab to Termini and train to Da Vinci? Pulling 3 weeks of bags each with a bumb shoulder.

I wouldn't trust a Roman Taxi Driver as far as I could throw him...at least not when the ride originates or terminates at Termini. We took Roman Taxis around town from place to place, and the only place we felt ripped-off was when the ride originated or terminated at Termini.

Save yourself a big headache and get a private driver or shuttle service to pick you up at your hotel and deliver you to the airport. I'm sure the Marriott could easily arrange that for you if you don't want to do it yourself.

Thanks, just wondered if the relatively new "Taxi Rate" was working. Don't want to have to lift bags onto and off of more trains than I have to. Have had pretty good luck with hire cars in Paris.

Thanks again.

It would cost 22 E for the train plus the cab to the station. 40E is not bad for the convenience of a taxi and would be worth the difference. There probably will be a surcharge for your luggage.

I used Jimmy Tour to pick me up and take me back to the airport from Rome and was very happy with them. The cost was 50 Euro for transfer in a newish Benz with a good english speaking driver. It was worth it and I 'll use them again on my next trip.

Ed, this isn't a direct answer to your question, but ... Especially considering your shoulder, why are you taking so much? Read thru Rick's book "Europe Thru the Back Door" or see an excerpt at http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/tips/packlight.htm. Whether you're going for 3 weeks or 3 months, you can bringt the same amount of stuff. That amount is 1 carry-on bag with 1 weeks worth of clothes.

I think that if your hotel calls a taxi that they deal with on a regular basis you can take the cab without problem.

Stayed at the Marriott in July (off of Via Veneto). The concierge was very helpful and am sure he could arrange for a cab.

Thank you all again for your thoughts. Have done some travelling before, but each city and situationn has its own quirks and there is always a better idea and tour company or shuttle.

I have believe me, cut back on my travel "supplies", if you will.

As you have had good answers, we will be in Siena for 4 nights and we will have a car rental. My original plan was to rent in Siena and then drive to Firenze on the 4th day and turn the car in there and then spend 4 nights there. What about turning the car in at Siena and then taking the bus or local train to Firenze. Sounds like a better option to me???

Ed, here is a direct answer to your question: the 40 euro flat rate is indeed in effect and works fine. We requested our hotel to arrange for a taxi, and rode in a large new Mercedes sedan. This was a few weeks ago. Door-to-door taxi service would be MUCH preferable to dealing with a cab at Termini and the train. And I've done all those things too. Besides, you won't save a dime using the cab AND train. (A euro dime.)

Last summer we were to take a service from Rome to the airport for an early flight but were notified that they couldn't guarentee that we be there early enough b/c of the brand new regulations (Aug 2006). Our hotel called us a cab and a mercedes picked up up for the and charged us 50 euros and was an excellent experience. the service would have charged us$24 each. Use you hotel to order you a cab.

I'll echo the previous two posts. I had to get to FCO for an early flight and had my hotel book the cab. It showed up right on time (4:45 a.m.) and I was at the airport in 30 minutes flat for E40. No problems whatsoever.
