Can someone please recommend a website to where I can purchase a rail ticket from Monaco to Monterosso? Thanks!
Monaco is in the French rail system and Monterosso is in Italy. Trains run frequently between Monaco and Ventimiglia (Italy), so you don't need to pre-purchase a ticket for that portion of your trip. Tix (on Trenitalia) from Ventimiglia to Monterosso or La Spezia are not expensive; I wouldn't buy this ticket in advance, but at the train station in Nice, Monaco or Ventimiglia.
I agree with Swan. Go to the RR station to buy your ticket at the window. You can ask the clerk questions and also get a computer print showing your itinerary.
Most people think reserving in advance is necessary, but I learned many years ago that buying tickets the day before or the day of travel will be OK.
Remember that once you get into Italy the train stops at almost every town. Normally you have to change to a local to stop at the other five villages, but not Monterosso. Be sure to ask the clerk about train changes if needed.
Most trains from Monaco to Monterosso are locals. They stop at every station. The runs, with train changes, take about 5.5hrs. However, there is a run that leaves at 10:21 from Monaco that is on faster trains (fewer stops as well). Almost an hour faster. This run consists of an EC train with a change to an ICPlus train in Genoa. This run will cost more as it does cost more to ride the faster trains.
CLICK HERE to see what the train schedule looks like. There is also another faster train run departing at 18:20 but it arrives in Monterosso at 23:04. Most of the smaller places to stay are all locked up for the night by then unless you have made other arrangements.
