Transportation from Ljubljana to Nuremberg

Hi fellow travelers,

After our RS Central Europe tour next year we are going from Ljubljana to Nuremberg.
I researched and it seems there are two main options; 1. Lufthansa flight with a change in Frankfurt
or 2. Lufthansa flight to Munich and take the train to Nuremberg from there. My main concern: I read
that you must get your luggage and completely re-check in yourself and luggage for the flight connection
from Frankfurt to Nuremberg. This seems time consuming and unrealistic - has anyone done this?
Is it correct? I don't see it mentioned on Lufthansa's site. Also, any recommendations on which of
these two options (or others I might have missed) is best? Thank you in advance for any assistance!

Where have you read you have to claim your luggage and re-check it in? If you stick to one airline, it should be transferred. Slovenia is both Schengen and EU so there is no immigration or customs.

Lufthansa looks like your best option.

My main concern: I read that you must get your luggage and completely
re-check in yourself and luggage for the flight connection from
Frankfurt to Nuremberg.

It's probably because it's a Rail&Fly-ticket, i.e. your "flight" from Frankfurt to Nürnberg is actually a train.

This seems time consuming and unrealistic - has anyone done this?

Yes, but it was a couple of years ago so things might have changed. But then it was a very easy process. The check in was mostly a formality that took less than a minute.

Frank and Badger,

Thank you! Frank, I thought it was on skyscanner.com that I saw those instructions. I've never taken
a hopper within Europe where I had to change planes before so this made me question if the luggage
would be checked all the way through or not. Badger, maybe I looked at the train connection accidentally,
not sure. When I go back now I'm not seeing those same instructions. Weird.... Yes, the flight with the
connection would be my first choice as long as the luggage (we are checking two bags) goes all the way
through before we need to claim it. Will double check with Lufthansa if I can chat with anyone there but
it does make sense for the bags to all the way through since we're staying within the EU. :0)

You probably looked at a Lufthansa option that included a train from Frankfurt.

before we need to claim it.

The flight with a connection in Frankfurt is probably with a connection to a train, in which case you will need to pick up the luggage. But the advantage is that you'll arrive in central Nürnberg and not outside the city

Although I mixed up things, and what you've found is a Lufthansa Express Rail option https://www.lufthansa.com/de/en/lufthansa-express-rail

Lufthansa does have a couple of "normal" flights between Frankfurt and Nürnberg, but the advantage of the train is that there is a departure every 30 minutes.

OK, after more research, it appears that Lufthansa would check our bags all the way through to
Nuremberg. However, after reading SO many complaints about connections in Frankfurt and people
with lost luggage we are thinking maybe the direct short flight to Munich/train to Nuremberg
would be the best option. It is also the fastest option. Hopefully less chance of lost baggage with a
direct short flight. Any input? I will research how to catch the train from the Munich airport. Anyone
with experience on that feel free to chime in. Again, thank you all! Logistics is the hardest part of
trip planning for me.

The fast train from Munich main station to Nuremberg main station which is downtown, takes a little over an hour, although Munich airport is outside the city which adds half an hour or so... Airport to Hauptbahnhof to Nuremberg. The Frankfort rail station is at the airport but the train journey is longer. Train service is very regular so I would pick the most convenient flight times and worry about the train add on afterwards. And the Nuremberg airport is a significant U-bahn ride out of the city to the north compared to the main station being right downtown.

Thank you NickB!

I just found another option to consider! Research, research! :0). Take the
short plane ride from Ljubljana to Munich and a private transport car service (considering Day Trip Company)
from there direct to our hotel in Nuremberg. Easy peasy. Not terribly expensive either. Hmmmmmm

By coincidence, I happen to be in Nuremburg now. Tomorrow, I take the train to Munich.

Depending on where you are staying, the train station is very convenient to the old town area and there is a fairly efficient underground and tram system. All the stations have either escalators or elevators.

Munich is a little over an hour away but it will mean getting from the Munich airport to the main train station to get to Nuremberg.

You can get a direct train from Frankfurt airport, no changes, to Nuremburg. It takes 2.5 hours (approximately).

If your budget allows, then a private transfer will take you door to door.

It's really your choice. There is no right or wrong answer.

One option that has not been mentioned: Lufthansa runs an express coach between MUC and Nurnberg. When you look up Ljubljana - Nurnberg on the Lufthansa Website you will see that flight to MUC, then coach to Nurnberg is one of the options offered.

The Lufthansa coach from München airport to Nürnberg is also a good choice.

But also, don't overthink this. In my opinion there is no obvious best route and it comes down to price/timing/personal taste.

And if you have time, you can take the train all the way, the scenery along the way is great!

Thank you everyone for the input! It was very helpful! Turns out the private car is more expensive than
I first thought so we will probably train it. :0)

You need to change train München Hbf (central station), but it's a very easy trip by train from München airport to Nürnberg.

No need for train via Munich Hbf. Just take the LH Express bus to Nurnberg.

But if I'm not mistaken, this bus goes from MUC to Nuremberg airport, not to the city center. And it can only be booked together with the Lubljana-Munich flight, because technically it is a connecting flight from Munich to Nuremberg.
It might still be worth it, though, because often the price of a connecting bus/train is only slightly higher, and besides, it's only a 12 min subway ride from Nuremberg airport to the city.
