Our tour ends in Lake Bled on May 28 and plan to use FF miles to fly RT in/out of Budapest. Are there any low cost airlines that fly non stop from that area into Budapest? It appears all that I looked at change in Germany and are pretty pricey (over $200 each) I am willing to travel by train, however am having a hard time reading the train info. Since I have not booked air yet I am flexible
with travel dates. Thanks
Hi Dona. Lake Bled is close to Ljublana, Slovenia; perhaps you could just fly home from there instead of going back to Budapest. I see United / Star Alliance flies from there; you don't say what FF miles you are using. Enjoy your trip!
There are no direct Budapest flights from Ljubljana (here's the current timetable http://www.lju-airport.si/eng/passanger-visitors/flight-info/timetable-departures). I took this tour and flew into Prague and out of Munich (on a FF ticket), so it is possible to purchase open jaw tickets (at least on Delta). Try searching for other cities too - Vienna or Munich, or even Prague. I took the train from Lesce Bled direct to Salzburg then on to Munich. I used bahn.com to buy tickets (because my train travel was through Austria/Germany). Also try the Austrian train site (http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp) - remember that they use European names for trains (Vienna is Wien, Munich is Munchen)
i believe there is a daily night train from LJU to Budapest. You can take a bus/train from bled to LJU and just store your bag in the train station and wait for the night train. it's not comparable to airline travel, but it's relatively cheap and you save a day.
