My father (age 76) and I are flying into Heathrow....midday May 3. This time around, I am thinking taxis or a bus is better for him (and for me) ....Would appreciate hassle free ideas that don't break the bank!

A taxi is gonna cost between $100-150 USD. A good compromise might be to take the Heathrow Express or Heathrow Connect to Paddington, and from Paddington a taxi to your hotel.

A private car service would be cheaper than a taxi. I've read many favorable reports about www.justairports.com. There is a sizeable discount for paying cash.
Another option would be to take a National Express coach to Victoria coach station with your bags riding in the luggage bay. Fare: £4. Then take a short taxi ride to your hotel.
