Transportation from Gatwick to LHR...

We have a late night arrival (2340) to Gatwick in April and have a flight out of Heathrow the following day at 1400. Logistically, because of the late flight, we were thinking of staying close to Gatwick and then traveling to LHR the following morning. What is the best way to travel in this situation? Any recommendations on accommodations near Gatwick (less expensive the better)? Is there a direct shuttle between the airports and if there is, is this the best option? Time wise, will we be able to see or do anything close by, or should we be totally focused on making it to the airport? Any other issues we should be aware of? Thanks!

Frank's recs are very good. Think of it as a big triangle with London at the top. Depending on your mode of transportation it is between and 30 and hour both into London and back to HRow. And about an hour by bus between the two airports. HRow can get pretty zooish with mid PM departures so being there by 1100 is not a bad idea. At best you might have a couple of hours to look around. Hampton Ct is fairly close to HRow so you could get a quick peep by grabbing a cab for a couple of hours. Beyond that I think you are stuck looking at the airport. Save it for the next trip.

The National Express bus that goes directly from Gatwick to Heathrow is probably your best bet. Here's info on that and other choices:

You could try staying at the Yotel directly in Gatwick airport. You pay by the hour so it might save you money and be more convenient.

If you decide to stay at Gatwick, the Premier Inn is an easy walk from the North Terminal, and although it's a couple of years since I stayed there, it was always very clean and comfortable, with good soundproofing. Not too expensive either.
