Transportation from Gare du Nord

Successfully booked a Eurostar ticket FROM London TO Paris. What Metro, RER, bus or taxi should I take to get to your recommended Hotel Champ du Mars? Do I need to transfer? Does that require another ticket? Jane

Maybe your hotel will book transportation for you. You can go on-line and book a transfer. We used sales@heathrowshuttle.com for our transfer to (I think Saint Pancras station) the Eurostar. It worked out great.

Thank you but I think St Pancras is in London. I am going to Paris Gare du Nord from London St Pancras and the hotel does not provide transportation. If nobody responds to this, I will contact the transfer company you recommended.

Take metro line 4 from Gare du Nord to Strasbourg - Saint-Denis. Transfer to metro line 8 and take it to Ecole Militaire. A single ticket includes unlimited transfers until you exit the system. For a zoomable map of the metro and RER system, go here: http://tinyurl.com/6xmvms4.

What you do is look for the signs to the metro area after you get off the eurostar. Then take Metro 4 south to Strasbourg-Saint-Denis where you switch to Metro 8 westbound to Ecole Militaire. When you get off you're less than a five minute walk to the hotel. There will be metro maps all over the place on the walls - - just remember that you want to get to Ecole Militaire. One ticket will do the job.

Our taxi from Gare du Nord to our hotel in the Latin Quarter only cost about $20 and the taxi driver pointed out landmarks on the way. It's definitely the easiest way, especially if you have luggage.....If you do decide to use a taxi, write the name and address of your hotel on a file card because the taxi driver probably won't understand your destination otherwise.

Jane, I have a few points to add. Just to clarify, I'm sure you noted on the EuroStar booking information that you'll have to be checked-in at least 30-minutes prior to scheduled departure time at London St. Pancras. This is important! You'll have to pass through airport-style security and French Immigration control, so be sure to leave lots of time. The waiting room is one floor below track level, and there are a few shops there if you need to buy a cup of coffee or whatever. As the others have mentioned, look for the Metro signs when you arrive at Gare du Nord. It's a large and busy station, but you should be able to easily see the signs. The route mentioned by Tim and Ed is the one I normally use, and it's very easy. When you arrive at Ecole Militaire, walk up to street level to Rue Cler. As I recall, you'll walk down a block or so, and turn left at Cafe du Marche. The Hotel is not hard to find. I find travel via Metro is the quickest and most efficient method, as it's not affected by traffic. Happy travels!

Thanks to all of you who replied. You really know your way around. I know there are two Metro stations near my hotel--the Ecole Militaire and the Invalides--and they are different lines. So happy to have this information; also to know I can transfer for free. Another person noted a web site that had pictures of the inside of Gare du Nord and I forgot to write that web address down and the message is gone. It was pretty intimidating to see all that but it had some good info. Does anybody know that site? Thanks again for taking the time, Jane

Actually, those two stations are one stop apart on the same line.

Jane - I would suggest going to google maps and look at the area around your hotel. From there you can see the route you will need to travel once you have left the metro station. This is what I did when I stayed in this area a couple of years ago.

Jane, One point to add to the previous reply. If you want to have a virtual "walk" from the station to your Hotel using a computer view, you'll need to access Street View on Google Maps. Look for the "small yellow man" and then drag him to the street you want to explore. Have fun!

Jane, taxi will run about 15 euros. It may be easiest. But metro is good too, I see your hotel lists the Ecole Militaire metro stop as closest to them so thats the one I would get off at.

Jane, Just to clarify, when you exit the Ecole Millitaire Metro station, you'll be on Avenue de la Motte-Picquet. Walk about half a block along that, and then turn left onto Rue Cler. When you reach Rue du Champs de Mars, you'll turn left at Café du Marche. The Hotel is a short distance along on your left. If you need them, there are two ATM's further along Rue Cler, across from Grand Hotel Leveque. I'd suggest packing two ATM cards, in case there are any issues with your primary card. Once you see the layout, you'll be comfortable with Paris in short order. Cheers!

Hi Jane, one thing to remember when you use the Metro. Know which direction the train heads. For example, you want line 4 (direction Porte d'Orleans) to the Strasbourg St.Denis stop. Then transfer to line 8 (direction Balard) and take it to the École Militaire stop. The direction the Metro line heads is in a bold font and a larger size on the maps. Good luck

You guys are making me feel "at home" in Paris. Not going till May but I'll try to keep that feeling of comradeship till then and it becomes familiar. Thanks,
Jane
