Transportation from FCO to central Rome hotel

This will be our first time to Rome and wondered if it is safe (or too difficult) for two ladies to try to figure out the train, correct stop, etc. to get us to our arrival hotel. Or should we just plan a transfer with the tour company? Your thought? Phyllis

My suggestion is that you peruse the excellent http://www.roninrome.com/ website.
He explains every way to get from the airport to the city centre. I took a bus to the train station and then a cab to my apartment. Easy.

Roninrome is a wonderful source. We took the Leonardo Express to Termini....it was super easy. At termini we took the Metro - just happened one of it's stops was a couple blocks from our hotel. You can either take the Metro, a bus, or a taxi from Termini.

Yes, RonInRome is a great source of info. I just got back from a week in Rome with the family and used buses, trains/metro, and taxis (and a lot of walking). From the airport with two people and luggage, I highly recommend taking a taxi or other private transportation to your hotel. Once you've settled into your hotel then explore with buses and the metro. Having luggage on a city bus or the metro is a huge hassle. Taxis in Rome are fairly inexpensive, you can go across town for about €15. Read Ron's site, he is correct about crowded buses and trains during rush hour. By the end of the week we were down to walking & taxis.

Phyllis,
You might want to consider a private car service. We have used romecabs.com many time and have alway been pleased. It only cost about 50-55 Euro but I'll bet that is less than your tour company charges. The cost is more than the train and just a little more than a regular taxi. But when you arrive tired, possibly jet lagged, and unsure about the lay of the land and where you are going, it is wonderful to have a uniformed driver waiting for you with a little sign bearing your name. Check out their web site and see what you think. TC

Thoroughly agree with the suggestions to order a car that will meet you at the airport. It's worth every cent. Which reminds me, I need to get my order in!

Phyllis, The easiest and quickest method from FCO into Rome is the Leonardo Express. The trip is ~35M and the cost ~€14 PP. Which area of Rome is your Hotel located? It's usually fairly inexpensive to get a Taxi from Termini to reach Hotels. There will be LOTS of Cabs outside the front door. That's a method I usually use when I'm first arriving and hauling luggage. Happy travels!
