When we arrive in the port we want to get our own transportation into Rome (through the ship too costly) We want reliable and reasonable.....do you suggest the train?

Going to need to define reasonable. You really have only two choices. The train - very reliable and very reasonable - at a price between 6 to 12E or buy an all day pass for 9E (last year's price) OR a taxi/hired driver. Just as reliable and may be reasonable depending on your definition - probably a 100E+ each way.

Thanks...sounds like the train is the way to go! Looking for the same info in Barcelona.......airport to downtown....then 3 days later downtown to the port.

The port in Barcelona is right at the end of La Ramblas where there is a cruise terminal but it will also depend on where the ship is docked. Sometimes ships dock some distance from the terminal. No experience with the airport.

There is an urban rail station inside the airport going downtown. It has 2 or 3 connecting points with local subway network, so you can reach the closest one to your destination.
