Can anyone help with transportation from Cinque Terre to Monaco/Nice area? Can you rent a car in Cinque Terre, or would it be best to take a train? (There are four adults on this trip.) Also, once we get to Monaco/Nice area, can we rent a car to drive to Provence or is it best to use train? Is it possible to rent a car in Italy and leave it in France? Thanks for your help!
Yes you can rent a car in Italy and drop it off in France but you may not like the drop-off charge. You won't be able to rent a car in the CT but you can rent one in nearby La Spezia. It's very easy to take the train to Nice Ville. At least 6.0hrs by train and possibly 7.0hrs depending on the run. Almost all trains are Regionale or Intercity types. No high-speeds. You will most likely change trains at Genoa, Ventimiglia and Monaco before arriving in Nice. But, you could get off in Monaco and perhaps rent a car there. I would suggest taking the train to Nice Ville and renting your car there. I can see the train fare from the CT to Ventimiglia (Italian/French border area) on the Trenitalia website. It runs from 11.70E to 20.80E depending on the train run you are on. It's easy to buy tickets in the CT to Nice Ville.
I am also hoping to train to Nice but starting in Rome. Does anyone know what's happening with construction interference? We'll be there early October. Thanks! Christine
