We are traveling from Vernazza to Florence in June. We were planning on taking the train, but it seems like none of the trains leave before afternoon. Any suggestions on a speedy way to get there any earlier and faster?
Lisa, complete schedules for dates after June 8 have not been posted on Trenitalia yet. Check a date closer to now, like next week,,to see a representative schedule. It will not change much. Also make sure you set the time to something like 6:00 or it may default to a later time. The current schedule shows you can leave Vernazza as early as 6:23 am if you want.
Lisa, As Lola mentioned, the schedules for June may not be posted yet, but there will be numerous trains on that route throughout the day, so it will be an easy trip. Which website are you using to research the trains? On that route, you'll probably be using a combination of Regionale, Freccia and InterCity trains, so it won't be entirely "speedy". With the Regionale trains, DON'T forget to validate your tickets prior to boarding the train on the day of travel, or you could face hefty fines ( which will be collected on the spot!). With the Freccia trains (and others), reservations are compulsory, which are specific to a particular train and departure time. Those without valid reservations will also be fined on the spot! Happy travels!
Thank you for your reply! I have been looking at the Deutsche Bahn's website that I got off of Rick Steve's website. I am new at this and not sure what I am doing. Can you recommend a website? Do I need to reserve tickets ahead of time to use the train. I guess I was thinking i would go and get a ticket and hop on. What is the difference between Regionale, Freccia and InterCity? Thanks for your help!
Lisa, I just went on my app for Dbahn on my iphone, it shows trains leaving at 0715,0832,0934, etc, but that's next week. They are very frequent. You have to take the train to La Spezia, which runs about every 15 minutes then connect to Pisa Centrale, then to Florence. Once you get there you will see how easy it is.
Once your get closer, you can get the exact times. Its a piece of cake, no worries. Have fun.
Thank you! Do you recommend the RailEurope website?
Hi Lisa. Best web site is trenitalia.com. For Vernazza to Florence, do NOT buy tix in advance; easier and better to buy when there. For Florence, use station name Firenze SMN. Regional, Intercity, and Freccia... trains are slower, fast and very fast. For this route, train type doesn't make much difference. Enjoy your trip!
Lisa, NO, don't use the Rail Europe website. They're a marketing entity and sometimes only show trains that they sell tickets for. As someone else mentioned, one of the best websites to use for trains in Italy is www.trenitalia.com (there's an English version of the site). You'll have to use the Italian names for the stations. Note that many cities in Italy (and other places in Europe) have more than one station, so you'll have to know the correct departure and arrival stations. Regarding reservations, those will be included with any P-P tickets (if required). The tickets will specify your Car No. (Carrozza) and Seat No. (Posti) and the reservation is valid ONLY for the train specified (ie: ES9708). If a particular trip involves several different types of trains, you'll usually be provided with a card (ticket) for each train. If one of the trains is a Regionale (ie: R24484) then you MUST validate the ticket prior to boarding the train on the day of travel! I tend to buy tickets at the local stations, either from a staffed ticket office or from the automated Kiosks, usually a day or two before I'll be travelling. Savings are possible with pre-purchase of some types of tickets, but I don't usually do that. For information on the various types of trains, you may find it helpful to have a look at the excellent Seat 61 website. There's an enormous amount of information on that site, so you should be able to find ALL the details you need. Cheers!
