In Italy, you are required by law to have an IDP.

Your government strongly suggests you have an IDP for anywhere in the EU.
Additionally in Italy, if stopped and you do not have this translation, or a correct translation of your driving licence (the law is ambiguous in Italy), you can be fined something over €80 the last time I saw it mentioned.
