Not a viable option: a night train is one of the worst in Europe, and daytime trains don't exist. Fly instead.

If you're willing to make several connections, it certainly is possible to travel by train during the day from Ljubljana to Milan. For detailed timetables see the German Rail site. The fastest route (7hr43min) is Ljubljana-Villach-Venezia Mestre-Milano Centrale with the Villach-Venezia Mestre leg being a well-appointed express bus operated by Austrian Rail. If you book well in advance on the Austrian Rail site, you can get discount fares as low as €19 for Ljubljana-Villach and €19 for Villach-Venezia Mestre. If you book well in advance on the Trenitalia site, you can get a Mini fare as low as €15 for Venezia Mestre-Milano Centrale. According to the search engine skyscanner.com, the fastest route (4hr10min) by air is Ljubljana-Prague and Prague-Milan on Czech Airlines with a combined fare as low as $481 US. When you add in the time it takes to get to and from airports, taking the train isn't all that much slower than flying. You can sit back and relax and see the countryside out your window. And it's cheaper than flying.
