We are interested in taking a ferry from Belfast to Scotland and on to Edinburgh, but the Stena line ferry no longer seems to go to a town with a direct train line into Edinburgh. Should we try to go via coach...or is it easy to get to a train connection town from the ferry.
Where does the ferry dock in Scotland? It might be possible to take a train from there to Glasgow then over to Edinburgh.
According to the Stena Line site, you can book a Sail & Rail ticket for as low as £55 that includes the ferry from Belfast to Cairnryan, a bus from Cairnryan to Ayr, and then trains from Ayr to Edinburgh (with a connection in Glasgow).
Thanks Tim and Monte...the ferry does land in Cariayan (spelling off) So I will check out those options. Thanks for the quick help!
2.5 hours on a ferry, 30 minutes to transfer to a bus, 1:10 on the bus to Ayr, 18 minutes to transfer to a train, and 2.5 hours to Edinburgh, including a change at Glasgow? Sounds like an awful day. I think I'd fly.
The train from Glasgow to Edinburgh is one hour, and of course, one hour from Edinburgh to Glasgow. That's with three short stops. If you buy a ticket for off times you get quite a reduction. We go to Edinburgh after nine in the morning and return after six in the evening.
Mary, Are you absolutely sure that you want to travel by Ferry from Belfast to Edinburgh? Using a budget flight will not only be faster, but probably less expensive also. For example, you could use EasyJet directly from Belfast to Edinburgh. Flight time is about 50-minutes and current prices are as low as £33.99 PP. Happy travels!
Thank you all for your responses. I am so impressed by how generous Rick Stevites are with their time and insights! You've given me some great ideas to think about! Mary
