We will be traveling fron Cinque Terre to Villefrance and would like to take the train. I'm having difficulty finding out how many transfers and how long of a trip. Anyone done this?
In the first place, Cinque Terre is a region, not a town. You will need to put in a station name, like Vernazza et al, to get a schedule. And, second, I think Villefrance might be a town without a station, so you will only get a listing of bus stops in Villefrance.
Are you referring to Villefranch near Nice? If yes, you can easily take the train from the CT to the Nice Ville train station. The journey takes between 5.5hrs and 6.5hrs with 2-3 train changes.
Jacqui, You probably need to route this way Monterosso-Ventimiglia Ventimiglia-Nice Take the CT train to Monterosso. There is a train that leaves around 1pm takes 5h33m one change in Ventimiglia, station is very small, don't worry about time. Cost $20-30. There is a train to Ville Franche, but the station name is different. Your hotel should be able to help you.
Have a great trip.
You could also rent a car at the Nice station, but if you do be sure to check out the return location...a little bit out of the way
Right...that's what EVERYBODY needs in Cinque Terre - a rental car ;-)
The full name and correct spelling of the town is Villefranche-sur-Mer and it does have a train station. The best train timetable site for virtually all of Europe is the German Rail site. Using Vernazza as a departure point, I found routes that include only one connection (Ventimiglia) and others that include two (Genova and Ventimiglia). If you don't mind getting up early, you can leave Vernazza at 04:51 and be in Villefranche-sur-Mer at 10:58.
Wow! You people are better than the internet!!! Thank you all.
Tim, I think what Gerri implied was to check out renting a car in Nice to drive to Ville-Franche AFTER leaving the CT.
Robert, Regional trains from Ventimiglia to Nice stop in Villefranche-sur-Mer. (Nice is seven minutes beyond Villefranche.) No need to go to Nice and then backtrack to Villefranche. And certainly no need for a car.
