What would be the best way to get from Lausanne, Switzerland to Sarlat France using the trains and driving the least amount of miles by rented car. (rented where I'm dropped off by the train)

You can take the train all the way. Depart Lausanne at 08:17; connect in Geneve, Lyon, Perigueux, and Le Buisson; and arrive in Sarlat at 21:00. See the German Rail site for detailed timetables.
