It is my first visit to the south of France, Nice. I will arrive in Paris in the morning of the 5th of Sept, 2009. What is the best way to travel to Nice? Cost is important and we can not get into our apt until late afternoon. What is the best way to get from Paris to Nice and any suggestions for our return to Paris. Thanks John
Since you will already be at the airport, arguably the best way would be to fly. The alternative is a six-and-a-half hour train ride (which departs from Charles deGaulle).
"Best" always has a subjective element, but probably the best thing would be if you bought a ticket to Nice, not to Paris, in the first place.
At some times of the day you can take TGVs from CDG to the south of France (with connections) and get to Nice without going into Paris. At other times of the day you will have to go into central Paris and depart from Gare de Lyon. See the timetables at www.bahn.de. Enter Aeroport Paris-Charles de Gaulle TGV as your departure point. After you get summary timetables, click on "Details for all" to see the connecting points. Enter an arbitrary date for any Saturday between now and the end of May. (New timetables will go into effect in June.)
easyJet is a budget airline that flies to Nice from both CDG and Orly. There are only two flights a day from CDG. Your best flight choices are from Orly.
On your return to Paris your choices are flying, daytime TGVs, and a direct night train.
