Transportation

What is the best scenic mode of transportation from Rome to Venice in early September? Salzburg to Zurich in early September? Also, when leaving the cruise port in Rome, how much time do you believe we should allow to deport and travel to the train station at 7 a.m.?

Your third question is unclear. Are you asking how long it will take to disembark and get to the train station at Civitavecchia (Rome's port)? Or are you asking how long will it take to disembark and get to the train station (Termini) in Rome?

Good point. We will leave Rome via Termini. Thanks much, Norma.

Your ship will dock at 7:00am but you won't get off and find your luggage in the baggage shed until after 9:00 very likely. Then if you plan on taking the train to Rome, allow about 2 hours to get to Rome, including the time you'll need to get to the station in Civita. and buy your tickets, etc.

Good info. Since we are purchasing our tickets in advance; will eliminating the waiting in line for tickets provide enough extra time to make the 11:15 train?

Most of the trains that go between Civitavecchia and Rome are Regionale trains. There is open seating and no reservations are possible. There is a FRECCIABIANCA train that departs at 11:07 and arrives at Roma Termini at 11:50. Book that train well in advance at trenitalia.com to get a MINI fare of €9.00. Your seats will be reserved and your tickets will only be good on that train. A big advantage to doing this is that you won't have to stand in line with everyone else who has just gotten off the ship and is buying tickets at the station. Book TODAY on trenitalia.com to get the lowest fare still available for Rome-Venice on a high-speed train. MINI fares start at €9.00 and go up in 10 euro increments as the allotted tickets at each MINI fare level sell out. The standard 2nd class fare is €76.00. If you book well in advance on the Austrian Rail site, you can get a discount fare as low as €29.00 on a direct Railjet from Salzburg to Zuerich. The standard 2nd class fare is €84.40. Booking is open now through at least the end of September.
