First - define best. Has no mean by itself. Second Italy is a big place - look at a map - and where you are going might influence the answer. Going to Rome - probably fly. Going to Genoa probably the train. Help us so we can help you.

He wants to go from Marseille, France and travel to Italy. In Italy he would like to start with Genoa, Milan, Venice and end in Florence. We thought it would be best to travel by train so that he can stop as he wished to take in the scenery. How easy is it to get a train from Marseille to Genoa?

It's easy. Just buy a ticket and board the train. Check your schedule on Deutsche Bahn website. On this page click on Favorite Links and that takes you to DB website. From Marseille to Genova you will have to change trains at least twice. The fastest connection takes little over 6 hours.

"We thought it would be best to travel by train so that he can stop as he wished to take in the scenery." Do you mean actually get out of the train here and there and take in the scenery? Or, perhaps take a multi-day trip and really take in the scenery? There two options are completely different from buying a ticket and going in one day...
