Iam taking at dahy trip to Venice on 7/28/09 from Rome. Iam fling at 6:55am and geting there at 7:55. I want to come back on a train and vist Florence for 3hrs and head back to Rome. Should I book the train ahead of time or just play by ear that day and get tickets that day.

ya that seems way to long for a day trip....I can not see how you would be able to do and actually see anything.

Are you really sure you want to do this as a day trip? It would be much better if you at least spent the night. The train time from Venice to Rome is minimum 4:30. If you also want to spend time in Florence - presumably while everything is still open - then it really would give you just a few hours in Venice.

That's tough! I suggest maybe spending the night in Florence, before heading back to Rome the next day. Although you will still miss a lot of attractions by this.

You will need a minimum travel time of about 8.30 hours, travelling on the fastest trains available, for the whole trip.
