Transport from Nynashamn to Stockholm

I will be going on a Baltic cruise in June and the ship docks at Nynashamn rather than in Stockholm. The cruise line wants a pretty penny for this transfer, so I was hoping to take public transportation. Can anyone tell me how to get from the cruise port to the bus/train station and which bus/train to take? And we'll be there on a Sunday. Will that effect the schedule? Thanks!

Unfortunately, Nynäshamn is about an hour by train from Stockholm. You take the local commuter train (called the pendeltåg). Some trains go directly to Stockholm and others require a change in Västerhaninge.

You can check the winter timetable here:
http://sl.se/ficktid/vinter/v35dec13.pdf. You should check back on the SL site before your journey for the latest timetable.

When you check the schedule, Sunday is Söndag in Swedish. The train station that you want to travel to is Stockholms Centralstation (or Stockholm C). The central train station is connected to the underground (tunnelbana - stop T-Centralen). From there, you can take the underground to the sights that you wish to visit or go outside and walk or take the bus.

I've only been to the port in Västerhaninge a couple of times. I can't remember the details of getting to the train station. I believe through that it is not a long walk.

I'd suggest you buy a 24 hour or day card for SL. This will be valid not only for the pendeltåg, but also for the tunnelbana and bus in Stockholm.

The directions to the station were excellent, but I went to the SL site and tried to use the journey planner. When I put "Nynashamn" in the "From" box, it asked which station I wanted to use and a drop down menu listed about 50 options. Which one do I need to use? I also went to the cruise critic boards and couldn't find the answer to this question. I'd like to get a 24 hour transport card and I read that Nynashamn is an unattended station and you can't get one there. Is this accurate? Thanks for the help!

Betsy, you want to pick Nynäshamn Station as your starting point in the journey planner if you are starting at the train station. Alternatively, the link to the pdf in my post shows the timetable for the train route that you will take.

In Sweden, you can buy SL tickets at the chain of newstands called Pressbyrån. You will often find these near the train station.

Thanks everyone! Hopefully now I won't miss the ship because I'm stranded in an unpronouncable Swedish village somewhere. Although now that I think of it, that might not be so bad..
