Hello - We want to fly into Heathrow and then take Ryanair out of Stansted. How do we get between airports? How long does it take and how do you do it? Train? bus? Cost? Thanks.
They are at opposite ends of the world. A number of options -- none great. There is a bus that connects and depending on time of day could take a couple of hours. You could take the tube to the Liverpool station and train out to Stansted, Probably the cheapest. A little quicker would the Heathrow Express to Paddington, taxi (or tube) to Liverpool and then the train. If you have a lot of luggage, the bus would be most convenient,
National Express buses leave hourly from Heathrow direct to Stansted. It's £21.50 one-way/£30 return. Takes 1.5 - 2 hrs depending on traffic. They advise having 4 hours between landing at LHR and check-in at Stansted.
Tube to Liverpool Street (one transfer) and train to Stansted will cost about £2-5 on the tube depending on time of day, and £15 single/24 return on Stansted Express. 45-60 minutes from Heathrow to Liverpool Street on Underground, and then 45 min. by train to Stansted.
We're doing the opposite in June on our return trip from Rome...flying into Stansted on Ryanair and then departing Heathrow. I've booked our flights to get into Stansted at around 7pm and depart Heathrow at 11am the next day and probably will stay at a hotel near Heathrow. Given plenty of time and light bags (per RS tour guidelines), is the bus the cheapest and simplest way to get between the two?
The cheapest route is to take a National Express coach from Stansted to the Stratford tube station in London (£8). Buses run about twice an hour. Then take the Tube to Heathrow (£4 for a single ride, including transfers). Take the Central line to Holborn and the Piccadilly line from there to Heathrow. Allow at least an hour (it can take a lot longer if traffic is heavy) from Stansted to Stratford. It will take about an hour from Stratford to Heathrow. To be safe, I'd allow three hours for the whole trip.
I got this by Googling "heathrow to stansted airport." It looks pretty comprehensive.

www.nationalexpress.com is the website for National Express buslines. They leave frequently (more than hourly at some times, less so at others). The trip from Heathrow to Stansted takes between an hour and a quarter, and 90 mintes, depending on traffic. When I did this last May, a round trip ticket was 26 GBP. A one-way ticket was 20 GBP. I bought my tickets in advance over the internet, but when I got to Heathrow I was early. National Express let me just hop on the earlier bus with no problem. It was simple and quick -- no changing from buses to trains, lugging your bags on and off.
I used the London Toolkit site to get the route I listed in my previous post. Then I remembered that easyBus now runs from Stansted to Baker Street and Buckingham Palace Road. Booked online, the fare is as little as £2. See www.easybus.co.uk.
The Tube route from Baker Street: Take the Jublilee line to Green Park. Transfer to the Piccadilly line and take it to Heathrow.
If you use easyBus plus the Tube, your total fare could be as low as £6.
Wow! I want to thank everyone who sent me information. It has really helped and given us several possibilities. Thanks so much! Julia
