Transport and paying for petrol

Hello all,

We're traveling by car in Ireland for 10 days in April 08. We are picking up the rental car at the airport in Dublin and returning it to a place called Santry which is north of the Dublin airport.

I'm trying to figure out how to get from Santry to the city center or maybe from Santry to the airport where we could get a bus to the city center.

Haven't been able to find anything on the web and wondering if anyone has experience with this.

I could also call/contact the rental comapny.

Also, since we will be driving about 600 miles and filling the tank numerous times I was thinking of how best to pay for the petrol.

Specifically thinking of perhaps saving on transaction and exchange fees by paying cash.

I was also a little concerned if our cards (ATM or credit cards) didn't work for some reason, we might be stuck otherwise.

What do you think? I don't want to carry too much cash if not necessary but would like to be prepared.

Thank you in advance for all thoughtful replies!!

You probably won't have to fill up as many times as you might think. Those little cars get great mileage. I paid cash when I bought gas. If I remember correctly, Santry Rd is just outside the Dublin Airport. Several of the car rentals have offices along there, and you drop your car there and take the shuttle to the airport. If you are planning on spending time in Dublin, you might want to wait to pick up your car just before leaving Dublin. Parking is expensive in the city center, and you don't need a car there.

Thanks Jeff, I would not have thought of that although have been slighty concerned about damage to the rental car while maneuvering in the round abouts and driving on the side of the "other" side of the road.
I appreciate the advice.

All the petrol stations take Visa and Mastercard and there is no problem using them. Most take Amex and Diners as well. That's how most of us pay for petrol.

As for the car rental drop off, the shuttle buses pick up at all the rental drop off points and will set you down at the city bus stop.

Thank you both so much for your help!

Felt like I had most everything else but this figured out, whew.

Thanks for the tip about parking in Dublin. We're going to pick up the car when we land, skirt Dublin and head for the south and west. We'll drop the car off before visiting Dublin at the end of our travels and skip driving there altogether.

Thank you again!

Since you will be driving in the left lane of narrow roads with a right hand steering car you should consider removing the hub caps (if it is possible) on the left side of the car before you start out. Chances are very good that you will hit a curb or two and you don't want to have to pay for lost hubcaps.
