My itinerary is as follows: AMSTERDAM to PARIS Sunday March 20 approx. departure, morning PARIS to AIX-EN-PROVENCE Tuesday March 22 approx. departure morning or afternoon AIX-EN-PROVENCE to BARCELONA Thursday March 24 desired arrival, 8 p.m. How to plan for these destinations with transportation by train? Should I buy point to point or the pass? Also, student youth discount applies.
Thanks for your advice!
At this late date the best discount fare point-to-point tickets are likely to be gone. Since you qualify for a youth railpass, that's probably your best option now. Buy the five-day, three-country (Benelux-France-Spain) 2nd class youth pass ($305). You'll need to buy a passholder fare ticket on a Thalys train from Amsterdam to Paris. You'll need to buy a seat reservation on a TGV from Paris to Aix-en-Provence. You'll need to make several connections to get from Aix to Barcelona and some legs will be on trains requiring seat reservations. Buy your Thalys passholder fare ticket and all your seat reservations as soon as you get to Amsterdam. See the German Rail site for detailed timetables.
