Transfer time - Rome airport

We will be arriving in Rome (from London) around 12:30 pm and want to fly on to Zurich the same day. There are two flights to Zurich in the afternoon--2:45 pm and 7:00 pm. Should we book the 7 pm flight or should we throw caution to the wind and book the 2:45 flight? Thanks!

We have a "free" ticket on BA and are flying to London for a few days before flying to Rome, as part of the "free" ticket. Since booking the tickets, friends have asked us to come to Zurich for a visit. We have a few days available to do so, before starting a RS tour. We plan to fly to Zurich on a Thursday and back on Monday before the RS trip starts. It's too late to change the tickets to fly to Zurich instead of Rome. I guess I could change the tickets--I may have to consider that option. Sometimes "free" isn't that great!

It all depends if your flight to Rome is delayed or not. That I cannot predict without a crystal ball.

Okay, IF the London to Rome BA flight isn't delayed, is there enough time (2.15 hours) to make a change to a Swiss Air flight to Zurich? It will be our first EU country on this trip, so will that cause a delay?

You would have to go through immigration in Rome as your entry point into the Schengen area. Also it is unlikely you would be able to check through any bags, if you are not just hand baggage only. One advantage of 'reward' tickets is that they are in general readily changeable within their limited availability either free or for a small fee. I'd look into this possibility first - you haven't said what scheme you are using or when you are travelling. Depending on this you might still find it cheaper though simply to dump your Rome tickets and buy replacements; the LON-ZRH route is moderately competitive with three companies flying the route (BA, LX, U2) from Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and City.
