transfer from Civitavecchia to Rome - city center

Hi! I need informations/recomendations on how to arrange transfer from the port (Civitavecchia) to our hotel in Rome. We arrive at 4 AM at the port from our Mediterranean cruise, and we will be heading to the hotel. Please, suggestions on companies will be truly appreciated!
Thanks!

If you aren't carrying a ton of luggage, the train station is walking distance from the docks (depends somewhat on where exactly your boat docks). If you do have luggage, I'd catch a cab to the train station, then again from the train station downtown to your hotel. Finding taxis probably won't be hard, they know when the ships come in and downtown is a big city. My biggest concern would be finding my hotel lobby empty, dark and locked (unless it's a major chain hotel). Make sure you have some contact phone number or other way to get into your hotel at that time of night. Others on this site can give you better information on checking the train schedule for departures. I highly recommend not getting a reservation for this leg. It's not going to busy at that time of night and a reservation is worthless if you arrive late.

Veronica, as Brad suggests, the train is the least expensive way to get into the central area of Rome. Not sure where your hotel is, but you can get off the Regionale trains at four different Rome train stations - so plenty of options. Depending on which station you're headed to, the price of a one-way ticket from Civitavecchia to Rome on a Regionale train will be €4.10 to €4.50 each - MUCH less than the cost of private transport into the city. You might look at these three articles. Although they primarily pertain to "roundtrip" and "one-day" visits, they will give you plenty of pictures, maps and train options that will help you get into town - Good Luck! While your ship may dock at 4 am, not uncommon, you will not get off until after 6 am and can probably stay as late as 10 am. Your ship will provide a bus shuttle to then port entrance. From there is it less than half mile walk to the train station - straight ahead and you can probably see it. Follow the crowd. Lots of people will be headed that way. Taxis will be swarming at the port enterance BUT they will not want to waste their time taking you to the station and miss the $150 fare to Rome. The train is the easiest way to Rome provided you are not lugging fifty pounds of luggage. We have made that run six times.

If you can't or don't want to handle your luggage in the train stations - Italian stations don't have porters - check out Rome Cabs Not cheap, but good and reliable. If you want to cut costs, go on the Cruise Critic board for your cruise to see if anyone wants to share transport.

Thanks everyone! We haven't arrange our hotel stay, but it's going to be in the city center. As some of you say, my biggest concern is the luggage because we are 6 persons, 3 of them over 65 years. We were in Europe 2 years ago on a multicountry trip (my husband and me) and we have no problem at all carrying our luggage up an down, but I'm not sure we can make it this way with our 3 aunts. If any of you guys knows about bus transport, please let me know. And again, thanks for your help!!! You also give some peace of mind with the fact thaat we will not get off the ship until 9 or 10... THanks!

Why is it that you think someone over 65 is a problem? We are 68 and 70 and have made that trip a number of times with no problems - luagge and all.

LOL!!! I know and believe me, most of our closest circle of friends, believe it or not, are over 60 (we are 35). But the persons I'm talking about are the kind who thinks age is a limitation. That's why I said what I said... As a matter of fact, my husband and me always take for example people over 65 years that we've seen sking and snowboauding, and taking long trips, and hiking in Yosemite (just for mention a place) on places where none of us wanted to go becuse we were so tired. So, people like you are our inspiration, REALLY! My excuses if I show a wrong impression. PS Excuse my English, I'm a Spanish speaker.

The taxis can be a rip off. We were quoted €20 for the half mile ride from the station to the port in 200+. We walked to the port shuttle bus instead.
