transfer at Genova Piazza Principe sotterranea

Does anyone know, when Trenitalia lists a regional train departure from Genova Pricipe sotteranea, does the ----- mean that one walks to get down there? Is this well marked and is this a safe area to go into?

There are at least a dozen train stations in Genoa. If you are traveling into Genoa on a regional train, you will most likely stop at all of them. Genova Principe Sotterranea is one of them. It's like a city bus on tracks. I just looked up a sample trip from Monterosso to Genoa on www.trenitalia.com. I can see every stop this train makes to get you to Genoa and 12 of those stops were in Genoa. What are you attempting to do? Perhaps we can assist further.

Genova Principe sotteranea (translates underground) station is one level below the central train station, much like with Naples 2 main stations. It's a short indoor walk between the two, and there's an escalator between the levels. The sotteranea station is always busy, so it's no more or less safe than any other train station. My recollection is that the signs are marked Binario 1S, the S meaning sotteranea.

Thanks. I wouldn't have known that Binario 1S meant sotteranea.
I was just looking at alternatives between Nice and Vernazza and then back to either Nice or Antibes, where we would rent a car for further travels in France. Trenitalia says the ICplus from Genova to Levanto or Monterosso must be reserved in Italy, so we may not be able to book that part of the trip from Nice. So I was looking at alternatives with regional trains. Then, too, if we missed a regional train, we could take another.
Another problem I have is that sometimes I have gotten pricing on Trenitalia, but most of the time I can't get to the pricing. I got rates from Ventimiglia to Levanto and rates from Genova PP to Monterosso one time but I can't get them again! We want to go on June 11 (Thurs.) and return June 14 (Sun.). I've backtracked to June 7 for the schedule.

Maybe Trenitalia doesn't give pricing for French lines. I haven't found any rates for the French portion. Is there a place to get those (Nice to Genova PP or Nice to Ventimiglia)?
Thanks again, Larry and Frank, for your help.

Jinny, a couple things. First, you cannot make advance reservations on a regional train. No seat reservations either. It's the local and inter-city bus on tracks. You buy your ticket, get on and find a seat. If no seats, you can stand. Usually there are seats. You will notice when you get your tickets on a regional train that there is no information about train numbers, departure times or seat reservations. It's an open ticket for 60 days which is why you have to validate it. Once you validate, it's good for 6 hours.

Second, Trenitalia has improved it's website. Before, you couldn't see the fares for most regional train runs. Now, you can. Just select "All Solutions Prices" just below the train schedule.

Third, Trenitalia may not give you the price from Nice to the CT but if you put in the CT to Nice, it will. You will then have your budget pricing. And, you can buy that ticket. You can buy a ticket from Italy into most areas of a neighboring country in Italy. I'm betting that when you purchase your ticket in Nice to the CT, you can do the same coming back into Italy without having to purchase again in Genoa. You may change trains in Ventimiglia, Genoa or both but I don't think you will have to buy any more tickets on the way.

Great--the "all Solutions Prices" worked for Monterosso to Nice. When the price box lines up with all the trains you'll have to take on a certain journey, is that the price for all the trains?
If we take the EC/ICplus option from Nice to Monterosso, does that mean that even if we buy the ticket in Nice we will have to stand in line in Genova to get a reservation (the note says "reservation must be made in Italy")?
Thanks again for all your help.

Jinny, I'm not sure on this one. It is possible that the French train system cannot see the seat selections from Genoa to the CT on their screen. Thus, they can't give you a seat reservation and you will have to get a seat reservation in Genoa. I need more help on this one.

Alternatively, you could take regional trains all the way. No seat reservations are permitted on regional trains. But, it would take about an hour longer.

Thanks. I guess we'll find out in Nice. We may go a travel agency there if the station seems really busy. Rick says someplace that they don't charge much commission.
