can anyone direct me to a good (not too small) map of the tramway system in Krakow? I am particularly wondering if the trams go into the Old town, or just around it. Also what is the tramway system like in Warsaw and Poznan?

The best way to get around Warsaw is on metro, which is good. Krakow trams are well-run and take you many places, such as to site of old Kutna Hora steel plant, local suburbs,near center of town.
Krakow itself is very walkable. As to Posnan, we walked most places so cannot say much about trams
