We will be visiting Florence in less than two weeks and plan to take the Tram to Santa Maria Novella Station. You have to pay extra for "large" suticases. If you are using tap and go (no paper ticket) do you have to use a different credit card for each suitcase? , Or is it better just to buy paper tickets for the luggage.
Are you sure about the luggage? Luggage has always been your personal responsibility. There is no checking of train luggage. I have never encountered a charge for luggage. The tap and go is for the L Express to Termini. You will need a ticket for Florence.
If your bag is larger than the specified size, or you have multiple bags, the best would be to buy a second ticket for it at one of the machines. The ticket machines likely are tap to pay as well, buy one ticket for you, one for your bag, remember to validate both on the tram.
My reasoning is that if they do check, better to have a validated paper copy, than to have them try to scan credit cards to determine if payment was made.
Thank you Frank and Paul for your prompt feedback. I will buy two tickets (one for me and one for the large bag at the ticket machines) if they are also tap and go. I have heard that the ticket machines sometimes do not work and/or are difficult to operate. If that is the case, then the next option would be to buy the tickets at the Tabacchi store.
I believe the Florence Tramvia is now tap and go.
If you’re worried, just buy tickets at the little shop to the left of the airport exit doors.
I always buy a couple of extra tickets to have on me while in Florence so I can use the buses or trams any time..
