I am booking some train tickets for my mother who will travel to Italy with a friend in July. The TrenItalia website won't allow me to book train tickets from Florence to Assisi, or return from Assisi to Rome. Does anyone know why? Do the tickets need to be purchased on the platform because its a regional line? Grazie mile.

For regional trains you cannot book tickets more than seven days in advance. However, there is no advantage in booking them online because there is open seating and no discount for advance purchase. Buying tickets at the station is the way to go. Tell your mother to be sure to validate (time stamp) regional train tickets in a machine at the station. If she doesn't do that, the conductor will assess a hefty fine that must be paid on the spot.
