Three adults traveling by train from Paris to Florence-staying a week with day trip to Venice -then going from Florence to Rome and flying back to Seattle.Would a flexipass be cheaper than point to point tickets? I don't know what the reservation costs would be or how to find out?? Any advice would be much apprecited. Thanks!
No way will a pass be cheaper, you are only doing 3 legs of travel, two of those legs won't be very expensive and a pass would be more, per day. Use tgv-europe.com for the ticket from Paris to Florence, check that you are in the UK (don't say you're in the US! You'll be directed to RailEurope.com which should be avoided) and print out the tickets at home. For Florence to Venice and back and Florence to Rome, use the Trentalia website.
Thank you Sarah!! You have been a great help.I will take your advice on point to point tickets.Your advice is much appreciated!! Peggy
Point-to-point tickets will be cheaper, especially if you book well in advance (up to 90 days) and get discount fares. While you can book Paris-Florence on tgv-europe.com, there are two problems for this particular route. 1. You will have to make a connection in Turin and tgv-europe doesn't provide for printing tickets for legs entirely outside of France. You would have to have them sent to you by mail. However, mailing tickets to the US is not an option. You would have to have them mailed to an address in France (like your hotel in Paris). 2. You will pay more for the tickets because tgv-europe doesn't offer discount fares for Turin-Florence while Trenitalia does. If you book Paris-Turin on voyages-com and Turin-Florence on trenitalia.com well in advance, you can get discount fares for each leg and you can print your own tickets for each leg. Trenitalia has just revised its Web site. For reasons unknown, you now have to enter the name of the station in some cities, not just the name of the city. If you don't, the site won't recognize it. When you book Turin-Florence, enter Torino Porta Susa and Firenze. For Florence-Venice enter Firenze and Venezia S. Lucia. Be sure to include the period after the "S". For Venice-Rome enter Venezia S. Lucia and Roma Termini. The German Rail site has detailed timetables for virtually all of Europe. Use it to get timetables for Paris-Florence.
