Jim I have known people who have traveled down to Zagreb on the bus and then taken the direct train to Budapest. Its about 6.5 hours which is about my limit on a train. Fare is something like 20 euro. The bus is 7.5 hours which exceeds my tolerance for busses. About the same price as the train from Zagreb. You could fly through Vienna for about $500 in as little as 3.5 hours. (search it as a round trip over a weekend for the best fare).
