Does anyone know what it would cost to go from Munich Airport to Garmisch, Germany? Do they take credit cards at the train ticket counters in Germany? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Linda.
Yes, they take credit cards at ticket counters. Some automats take credit cards, also. With some it's the only way you can pay.
The best fare will be a Bayern-Ticket (€20 Single, €28 for up to 5 people). You can buy it easily from a Munich metro (MVV) ticket automat in the airport. There is a button in the column of buttons on the right that says, "Bayern-Ticket. The ticket will cost an extra €2 at a counter for personal service.
Take the S-Bahn, either one, which ever leaves first, one leaves about every 10 min, from the airport underground station to the Hauptbahnhof (40 min). From there go to the Starnberger Flügelbahnhof ("Wing station"), tracks 27-36, attached to the north side of the Hbf. From there you can take a regional train to Garmisch (about 1½ hr).
Does this mean that I can get a ticket for 3 people for Euro 28? I really appreciate your help. Linda.
You can get a Bayern-Ticket, which is an all day pass for regional trains (IRE/RE/RB) in Bavaria for €28. It's valid for 2-5 people traveling together. One person must sign (in block letters) the ticket and be with it at all times.
It is also valid for any conveyances of the MVV (U-/S-bahn, trams, buses), which covers you on the S-Bahn from MUC to the Munich Hbf.
It can be used all day on weekends, after 9 AM on workdays, until 3 AM the next morning any day. It is not valid on express trains (ICE/IC/EC). Almost all of the trains from the Munich Hbf to Garmisch-Partenkirchen are regional trains.
The button for Bayern-Tickets on the MVV automat is near the bottom of the RH column of buttons on the RH side. When you push it, as I remember, the display will show three options, Bayern-Ticket Single (one person), Bayern-Ticket (2-5 people), and Bayern-Ticket Nacht (night). After you select one, it will either show you a screen with Heute (today), Morgen (tomorrow), and Andere (other), or it might just show you a calendar, so you can select the date.
When you arrive in the underground S-Bahn station at the Munich Hauptbahnhof, come up the escalators one level to the underground mall. Go west in the mall until you see a sign for tracks 27-36 (the Starnberger Bahnhof). Go to the end of the mall and up stair and look for a train going to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It might show Mittenwald as the final destination. If it shows Innsbruck as the final destination, make sure it also says Garmisch-Partenkirchen, as some trains go east, through Rosenheim, not through Garmisch (but I don't think they leave from the Starnberger Bahnhof.
