What does one do with the roll-on when travelling on trains in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany?
Liz , i assume you are just travelling with one roll on each right,, because you must handle and store your own luggage . There are usually racks at the ends of cars , you just load your stuff there, I sometimes take my bag with me cause its small and I am alone sometimes so can put it near me, but if someone is booked in seat beside you ,, There are on some trains, small overhead racks. Travel light.
Liz, As pat mentioned, there are generally racks at one end of each car to store larger luggage items. If you decide to use those, it's important to watch closely to make sure the bags don't "disappear" while the train is stopped. If the train is lightly loaded, it's often possible to keep the bag with you at the seat. There are usually racks over each seat for storing smaller luggage items. or between the seat backs, or overhead.
in my experience, at least on the fast trains, the overhead racks are big enough for a carry-on sized roll-on bag, but anything bigger will have to go at the racks at the end of each cars.
That's the nice thing about having a carry-on size convertible pack. I usually find space on the seat next to me unless the train is packed. If not on the seat, it fits easily in the overhead rack. At worst, it sits at my feet or on my lap. I've never had to leave my bag at the end of a car.
I know some get paranoid about leaving bags in the common storage area at the end of the cars. We have done it for years along with all of the other folks - mostly locals because the tourists are desperately clinging to their bags. We do use a light weight retractable cable lock to secure our bags to each other or to something solid. The day bag will go on the over head rack and will wrap a strap around one of the ribs of the overhead in the event that someone might run through and try to grab it. Have never seen that happen either but is a reasonable precaution as is the cable lock.
I'm with Frank. We use a bicycle lock to secure our roll-on case in the luggage area. Can sit back, relax and enjoy the journey.
