We will be travelling from Munich to Salzburg by train in mid June, and also taking the train into the Venice area. Is it necessary to book these trains in advance? Or is it pretty easy to just buy tickets on the spot? That is what I used to do, but am just curious.
you dont need a reservation for the munich to salzburg portion. but you will need one for the salzburg to venice portion. you can book that reservation in munich. i reccomend a coucette about 20 euro.
The cheapest way to get from Munich to Salzburg is with a Bayern-Ticket. It costs 27€ and is good for 2-5 traveling together. Travel is limited to regional trains, but you can go anywhere in Bavaria after 09:00 on weekdays (anytime on Saturdays and Sundays). The ticket is also good for local transportation in Munich. For Salzburg-Vienna, your cheapest option is a SparSchiene fare on the direct night train. See here: http://tinyurl.com/27m5fz. Book up to six months in advance by phoning the Austrian rail call center. Dial 011 (US international access code) + 43 (country code for Austria) + (0)5-1717. Omit the initial zero which is only used for calls originating in Austria. Call ASAP to have the best chance of getting SparSchiene fares.
