Trains in France

Is it possible to buy a ticket from point A to point B but get off the train for a couple hours in between and then get back on another train to continue the journey?

I'm looking to train from Marseille to Nice and stop over in Cannes on the way. I know I can book a train to cannes and then another to Nice, but I was wondering if they allow passengers to hop on and off between destinations.

Cheers

Yes--if you take regional trains. No--if any leg is on a TGV or any other train for which a reservation is required.

I used trains a lot last summer in France. You have to "composter" your ticket before boarding, at machines where you wait. That imprints a code indicating you've begun your voyage. Sometimes an agent came through and checked, sometimes not. Somewhere you should be able to find out how much time (this would be only for the regional trains) you are allowed to complete the trip- I knew once, but have forgotten, sorry! But I do remember a limit.

For the record, the time limit for completing a trip on regional trains is 60 days.

Thanks for the replies. I want to try to purchase some of my tickets in advance and didn't want to buy a ticket with a stopover in Cannes in case it's rainy that day and I decide not to stop. This way I can hop off if I want.

Thanks again!
