I'm traveling to Italy and Austria this fall and want the most scenic itinerary. I was thinking about taking the train from either Salzburg or Vienna to Venice. How long is the trip during the day, and is this the most scenic route thru the Alps?
Barb: Getting from Venice to/from Vienna is very difficult, as it requires riding two trains and a bus. The Alps get in the way. There are no reasonable priced flights. You can catch a train from Salzburg down to Innsbruck, thru the Brenner Pass and down to Venice.
The most scenic trip is by rental car through the Grossglockner High Alpine Highway, but it's a seasonal trip best done in the Summer and early Fall. The road takes you over the mountain south from Zell-am-Zee to Lienz, Austria. It is simply the most beautiful place I've ever seen.
Check out the V.S.O.E. It runs straight through I believe.
