Hey RS folks. Planning a winter trip this December. Likely landing Zurich. Next Strasbourg, next Nuremberg, finally Prague. In the past have used Eurail for multi county trips like this but the last time we used them the app was a MESS and there was NO live or real time help while on the ground in Europe. So, what to do? Buy tix every time we move, buy Eurail anyway, etc.? TIA
Are you aware of the Man in Seat 61? He's going to be able to answer most of your train questions, and he also links to travel agencies that can help with the rest.
Eurail passes are rarely a good choice. You often need reservations when using the pass, which defeats the “convenience” factor of the pass.
There are a few apps that you can use to book your trains:
1) For Zurich to Strasbourg, look at both the SBB app (Swiss rail system) and the SNCF app (French rail system). Prices may differ between the apps, so compare.
2) For Strasbourg to Nuremberg, you would look at SNCF, or the DB Navigator app (German rail system).
3) For Nuremberg to Prague, you can use the DB app. I’m not familiar with the Czech rail apps, but I’m sure they exist.
Generally, you can google “starting point” to “ending point” (Nuremberg to Prague, for example). Then click on the train symbol. This will give you the public transportation options. There will also be a link to the appropriate site to book tickets.
For Nuremberg to Prague, you can use the DB app ..
.. ... and pay double or even triple the price. Be sure to compare the fares at the Czech Railways webshop: www.cd.cz .
Thanks all!
