I am traveling from heathrow to bath to Leeds then back to heathrow. 2 questions. Luggage: what is the largest size allowed and can I have 2 pieces. 2nd: the only times I see the trains leaving bath and going to Leeds are after 5pm. Is this correct? Is so, any alternative that isn't a long bus trip or expensive airplane ride? Thanks for your help.
I don't know what website you are looking at or for what date, but for a wednesday in January, the Bahn website shows two trains per hour all day long. So does the RailEurope site.
You can't buy tickets for the UK on the Bahn site, and tickets from RailEurope will probably cost more than from the British railroad.
I see 2 connections every hour from Bath to Leeds all day long. All require a single change at Bristol Temple Meads station, and have a minimum 15 minute connection time. The luggage limit is what you can handle. I've seen people hauling giant suitcases on and off trains. They do look like they are struggling a bit. Lighter is better, but you can be the judge of that.
Use this for UK rail planning. http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/
National Rail Enquiries http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ is the best source for British railways, with links to companies selling tickets and running the trains. Also available are information about services on stations and much other very helpful information including railcard discounts, etc.
Regarding luggage - if you can carry it and you can stash it without causing an obstruction you can take it on a train, in most cases. But nobody will help you get it onto or off the platform or onto the train, and thee are small luggage areas in each carriage on some trains and none in others, especially suburban or underground trains.
Trains in general are not particularly comfortable with lots of luggage.
If your trip from Heathrow to Bath involves a bus or coach, particularly if you use National Express and/or via Reading - - all bets are off and you have to check with them for their particular restrictions.
When checking train schedules, make sure to set the time departure button to the time of day you want to travel - it sounds like you searched at about 5pm and the train website used that as your departure time.
Officially you are allowed 3 items of luggage into the passenger accommodation of a train free of additional charge. One piece of luggage must be capable of being held in your lap if required, whilst the other pieces must each not exceed 30 x 70 x 90cm in size.
Mind you if everyone turned up with this I doubt there would be room.
Thanks everyone, yes, I have no idea what websiite I was on either, but I have found the correct train schedule! The luggage was biggest concern. I only need to get it to Leeds, and fits the regulation size,so all is well.
Thanks again
