Do the trains and buses in France run on Christmas Day? I'll be arriving in Nice on December 25th and want to take a bus or train to Avignon right away. Should I plan on overnighting it in Nice instead?

Due to the SNCF (French national rail) monopoly, there is regional but no long distance bus service within France.
I sent a private note to a person who lives in Paris and just received an answer. He says that trains will be running throughout France on Christmas Day on a holiday schedule no different from any other national holiday. You should have no trouble getting from Nice to Avignon by train.
