Train upgrade - worth it?

Hello!

My husband and I are traveling to the UK in April. We will be taking the train from London to Glasgow (arriving Glasgow around 6pm). I've never taken a Virgin train. The upgrade to first class is around 40 euro for the both of us. If you have experience, is the upgrade worth the cost?

Thanks so much!

You are going to get both yes and no responses. Some people think upgrading is a good idea and others think it is a waste of money.

I've taken Virgin trains numerous times and have done the Glasgow to London route. I upgraded to first. I liked it and would do it again. If you are going during the week, you get a meal. If on weekends, a sandwich. Free non-alcoholic drinks and even a case were you can help yourself to bottled water. I also find the seats bigger and more comfortable.

In first class, the seating is 2+1. You could get two individual seats facing each other with a table between the two of you. Or share a table for four.

It's nearly a six hour ride. For me a no brainer-if the 40 pounds is not a budget buster by all means do it. You'll appreciate the extra comfort and amenities.

Definitely...a small price to pay for the upgraded amenities.

With the great xchg rate i would splurge for the comfort for the over 6 hr ride.

Its not ever necessary to upgrade on europeon trains.. but its always nice if the upgrade is cheap.
40 pounds for the both of you.. its worth it, if you can afford that.. go for it.

Hi Everyone!
Thanks for the input on this topic. We ended up springing for the upgrade to 1st class (Friday afternoon train from London to Glasgow) and it was a wonderful experience!
My favorite part - the nearly non-stop tea (or coffee) and snacks that were offered.

The extra space and reserved seats were definitely appreciated. We booked late so had seats at a four person table but ended up having it to ourselves for most of the 4 hour train ride.

If you come here wondering if you should go for first class - I say if it seems like a good deal for your budget: GO FOR IT!

Thanks for coming back with your report! I have to say, I'm getting more and more "sold" on first-class tickets on the train as I get older . . . .
