First time traveling from Budapest to Vienna. Any helpful tips regarding train travel (best website, best train, advance tickets necessary, etc.) between the two cities would be appreciated.
If you book well in advance on the Hungarian Rail site, you can get a SparSchiene discount fare as low as €13.00 on a direct Railjet train. The ticket will be for a specific departure date and time and will be non-refundable and non-exchangeable. Be sure you can commit before booking.
Thanks Tim, I will certainly check the website out!
Or you could purchase a ticket a few days and advance and I think they are somewhere in the 19euro range without restrictions. But it's been a few years and I could be wrong. If time permits I really, really love Gyor and the Archabbey at Pannonhalma. Gyor is half way between Vienna and Budapest on the main rail line. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pannonhalma_Archabbey http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gy%C5%91r When you arrive in Budapest you will need transportation? If yes then your choices are the metro (which can be a pretty good solution depending on where you are going) or calling a taxi. But be sure if you are going to use a taxi that you call one and you don't use the taxis parked in front of the train station. My favorite company is City Taxi but there are other good ones. When the train pulls into the station make the call. When you get off the train face the front wall of the station and exit the doors on the left side of the station. This is the side the taxi will be sent to. Know you are in the right place if you see a Chinese restaurant. http://www.citytaxi.hu/
Hi, If you're going to Budapest as a day trip from Vienna, ie. returning the same day, there might be a discount on this r/t ticket. At least this was the case in 2010. I bought the ticket the day before going.
