We'd like to take the train from Nice, France to the five towns in Cinque Terre. Is it possible to do this in one day and back to Nice for the night? If so, what is the schedule.

Find the schedules on the German Rail website or Trenitalia.com. It's five hours from Nice to Monterosso. Spend an hour in Monterosso, then take the train to the next town for an hour, you have another five+ hours and you are in Riomaggiore. From there back to Nice is six hours. That's about 16-17 hours. Do you really want to do that in a day. My thought would be to go to Montorosso, spend an hour, maybe more there. Go on to the next town and the next. Spend the night in Corniglia. The next morning visit the last two town and go back, 6 hours, to Nice.

In my opinion -- no -- Nice is too far away. Look at a map.

I agree with Lee, but would stay in Vernazza. BTW, I've never gone to Santa Margherita Ligure, but it's closer and German Son-in-law says its very nice.
