I will be taking a European trip after graduating from college with three of my roommates starting in Athens. From there we will travel to Italy on a Ferry that departs from Patra and arrives in Bari. I cannot find any websites or information that would give a timetable for trains in Greece to get us from Athens to Patra. Any guidance in this department is greatly appreciated!
The Athens to Patras route is pretty common and there is a train, though when I looked at a schedule, it mentioned something about suspension of service. Never mind, if trains are available, they leave on a frequent basis from Athens, changing in Corinth, then getting to Patras. The Ferry leaves late in the day and the trip by train or bus is about 4 hours. Your options are really the train, KTEL Bus (Public) or private coach. As long as you leave early morning, you will be fine.
The train system in Greece is not as extensive or frequent as you find in western Europe. Therefore the bus system is more extensive and generally a better option than the train.
It's my understanding that there is a decent train from Athens to Petra. But decent in Greece is a whole lot lower than other Western European countries. There are busses for sure and it's a popular route so you can get there. As noted, it's about 4-5 hour trip.
