Train travel vs airline travel between three major cities

My wife and I plan on taking our 11 yr old granddtr on a 3 week trip to London, Paris, and Rome this June. Is it cheaper to get a eurorail pass, local passes, or simply travel between the cities via local airlines? If the latter is recommended, what airlines are recommended? Thanks, Dorsey

We may add Vienna and after rereading RS travel books, we are thinking of doing his suggested 4-day itinaries in each city. Dorsey

Take the Train (Eurostar) between London and Paris. The train from Paris to Rome will take at least 12 1/2 hours so I would suggest flying.

Go to Kayak.com to see what airlines fly between those cities and what it will cost.

If you then go on to Vienna, it will take nearly 13 hours so I would fly that route as well.

And don't forget to get written permission from both your granddaughters parents to take them out of the country.

If you have 3 weeks I would suggest that you take the train and plan on spending time in places other than the big cities. If a person came to the US for 3 weeks and saw only New York, Chicago and Las Vegas you would hardly say that they had seen much, or learned much about the US.

We're guessing on where you start but London to Paris on the Eurostar train without doubt. Paris to Rome you have some options. Flying is quick and cheap if you plan it but maybe granddtr might enjoy the experience of the overnite Paris to Rome train. You'll be in a small compartment (ensure you get a triple) with two bunks (an upper and lower) to the left or right and a third up close to the ceiling. We've done Paris to Venice on the overnighter via Nice (with a layover so not recommended) and while I'll not do it again, glad we did it once. The young one might enjoy the adventure; and with a bottle of bubbly, grandma and grandpa may as well.

London to Paris take train, then Paris to Rome fly. ck whichbudget.com altho your cheapest option may be out of Beauvais airport way north of CDG. If cost is no object you will have plenty of choice. buy now for air to get your best prices.
