I am hoping to travel by train from Venice to Munich on a Saturday in October. Cruise ships says disembark @ 6:45am. Hoping to catch the earliest train to Verona which appears to be at 6:58am. Next one at 11:50am. Connecting train to Munich is only allowing 5 minutes to tranfer. Is this even feasible? I have read I can ask for them to hld that train? Is that true? Five minutes for two with luggage seems impossible.
There is absolutely no way for you to catch the 6:58. Cannot be done. Where is the connection? Milan ? Verona? For experienced traveler 5 minutes could be OK. But if you are dragging a lot of luggage, probably not, especially if in Milan. Verona could be OK but don't have personal experience with that train station. Not sure what hid is - hold or hide ?? They will not hold the train for you. Where are you getting your schedule information? Without checking schedules, I would think that there would be more frequent trains to Verona.
Frank, she's catching a direct train out of Venice to Verona to hook up with one of the ECs to Munich. . . . Georgiann, I don't know where you are getting your schedules. I looked at Trenitalia (www.trenitalia.com) and German Rail (http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe), and and they both showed lots of trains (ES*, ICs, and Regional) from Venice to Verona in that time. Even RailEurope showed more trains. You should be able to find one earlier than 11:50 to give you more time to get to it in Venice and more time to connect in Verona.
Georgiann ^ ^ ^ You are saying, aren't you, that you land in one of the most romantic cities in the world and that you want to turn heel and leave it 13 minutes later? Oh well. Different strokes for different folks. ^ ^ No, if you were walking up the stairs from the landing stage at Venezia Santa Lucia Station with 13 minutes in hand you would be hard pressed to get to your reserved seats in 13 minutes, unless you know the station well. ^ ^ Not sure what hid the train means, but if it is "hold" you have no chance. See it from the train company's point of view. You have a train full of, say 350 people, all of whom want to be on time so they can make their connections, and the train company wants not to be fined for late arrival and not to compensate the 350 people who are late and so miss their connections, and somebody rocks up and says, "Please hold my train for 10 minutes so I can get on." How do you think they will respond? How would you feel if your train to Verona had somebody ask at Venice? ^ ^ ^ Now ^ You could walk to the taxi stand by the dock, take a taxi from there to Ple Rome, and either walk over the bridge to the station or take a vaporetto one stop, then up the stairs into the station. It will then be a hike to your train (lots of dead end platforms), then a hike along it to your car. Or you can get a vaporetto from the cruise terminal to Ferrovia (Italian for railway station). ^ ^ ^ If, instead of going via Verona you take the OeBB double decker train replacement bus up through the Dolomites and change at Villach and Salzburg. That leaves Ple Roma at 920 which would give you time to a vaporetto around the Guiadecca Canal, turn left at St Marks and a ride up the Grand Canal to Ple Roma. 25 minute connection at Villach, gorgeous scenery, and a 24 minute connection at Salzburg. ^ ^ ^ If 'twere me, that's what I'd do....
I've seen those cruise ships in Venice - granted, every one isn't the Disney Giant Fun Ship - but I would think if I read "disembark @ 6:45am", I'd expect to still be waiting MY turn at 6:58am :-( Then, you still have to purchase tickets, and the ticket lines - manned counters AND ticket machines - in the Venice train station have always had horible lines In My Experience.........Are you planning on stopping IN Verona for any length of time? My investigations show a train from Venezia Santa Lucia to Munich leaving at 11:03am with 33 minutes to change trains in Verona...You'd be in Munich at 18:25 pm. As soon as you disembark, go to the station and buy your tickets, then go find breakfast and some coffee in Venice.........(I tried looking at Trenitalia for ANY extra trains, although Deutsche Bahn is usually pretty complete, and Trenitalia only wants to show the night train right now...typical).........Oh, and you can ask them to hold the train, just like I can ask the wind to stop blowing...not gonna happen ;-). Sometimes the connecting train will wait when it knows the first train is going to be late, but never count on that!
Thank you Frank,Lee,Nigel and Eileen for your great information. Just to let you know I will have already played the tourist in Venice prior to the cruise, so I will have the opportunity to purchase the rail tickets one week ahead of my train trip to Munich. I have also looked at many of the routes you All have suggested and will bet on leisurely disembarking the ship and catching one of the many early trains to Verona and take Train#84 @ 1:05 for Munich arriving at 6:25pm. There is an earlier Train to Munich if I can only figure how to get myself to Verona before 9:00am. Arrival would be 2 hours earlier. I DID read that they will hold the train HA HA in one of my travel books, but I heartily agree wih all of you on that matter! Thank again for your information.
Yeah, I don't think the 9:00am train from Verona is going to happen :-(.........EC 84 it is. NOW I understand the importance of Verona in your original question...You've already 'done' Venice! Now you can have that breakfast/lunch in Verona, instead! You can get a 'Europa-Spezial Italien' discount ticket price for Verona-Munich if you can commit right now - I would buy the Verona-Munich ticket now, since there are so many reasonable trains b/n Venice and Verona to choose from (about 8?). But choose carefully - some of those V-V trains are 1 hr long, and some are 2 hrs...Of course, you'll certainly pay for that privilege of taking the 1 hr journey...Be sure to read about the cancellation/exchange policies...
Eileen, please expand on that info about the Euroa-Spezial Italien? Where do I find out about this? Do you think I could still get this special one week prior to going From Venice/Verona/ to Munich? That is when I will be in Venice for 3 days and able to stand in long line or is there a better place to buy tickets other than Venice St. Lucia Station. Or better to buy online now. Hate to commit, but can if backed against the wall. Thanks for your continued help.

Choose the number of people you need tickets for, and choose 2nd or 1st class - most people agree 2nd class is fine, but it IS a 5 1/2 hour train; check out the 1st class fares (they show up even when you choose a 2nd class fare for purchase) - then hit 'Search'. The next page will want the ages of each traveler, so input them and hit 'Refresh'. The next page shows your options...It's pretty self-evident from here on out, but DO PM me if you have any questions, or post a question to this thread. (click on all of the little gray arrows to the left of each train...lots of useful info on this particular website).........The latest these fares may be are available are 3 days prior to travel; click on "Offers" at the top of the DB page, then click on "Europa-Spezial" for terms and conditions for this type of ticket...
