Train Travel Switzerland

We, 2 adults and 2 teens(ages 17 & 19), will be in Switzerland for 4 days and then on the 5th day we will be going to Paris. I THINK I am going to buy the 3 day Swiss Flexi-pass for each of us but I have a couple questions.

I believe if we use 2 days of the 3 day pass and want to use the last day to get to Paris from Montreux then we will only have to pay 1/2 the normal ticket price. Is this correct, and if so, how do we go about buying that final ticket? Can we only buy it Switzerland or can we buy it ahead of time? Your help is greatly appreciated.

I have never heard of only paying 50% for ticket to Paris from Switzerland just because you didn't use 1 of the days of your Flexi Pass. However, just because I've not heard of it doesn't mean that you are incorrect! If you go to www.sbb.ch and send an email to them asking your specific question, they will give you the correct answer. I've asked them several questions in the past, and they always answer promptly and friendly.

This Tim thinks that the other Tim is correct. I believe you will have to buy a ticket for the portion from the French border to Paris, either from Lausanne or Geneva depending upon which route you take. However, the good news is that if you book far enough ahead (up to three months allowed) at www.voyages-sncf.com, you can get PREM'S (discount) fares on either the TGV from Lausanne or the TGV from Geneva to Paris.

And this Tim agrees also with the previous Tim that Prem tickets can be really good buys...I've purchased a few in the past and they were really cheap.

Hi Tia - too many TIMs - now you need a TOM to comment! :)
Seriously - you may want a flexipass that is Swiss/French combo. I know they have family or speical 2-or-more passes that save you another 20% or so (when all travel together) - but look online for the cost of that one paris train ride vs the multi-country pass. I think the passes will be cheaper.

So clearly this is the T forum Tia, Tim, Tim & Tom re: Train Travel-hahaha.

Thanks everyone. I priced the Swiss-France pass and it actually costs more than the three day flexi-pass plus the single journey to Paris(discounted or not).

Tim I did go to the French train site and after awhile (longer than I'd like to admit) I figured it out - I think. The only way I could get the discount was if I said I wanted the tickets delivered or picked up in France not USA, but I don't think that matters because I can just print them here. Right? Oh, I did find a pretty decent discount from Geneva to Paris too - just need to buy them now.
Thanks again.

Yes, just print the tickets at home.

Add one more "T" for "tee-hee"!

Since SNCF officially doesn't mail tickets to North America, leave France as the default country. Also, do NOT choose cancellation insurance. Then go ahead and print your ticket (if it's a PREM'S).
